Description
Black Bamboo is a very popular bamboo. Unfortunately nigra is the only black bamboo that survivors Victoria's climate. We have tested and trialled many black clumping and have been unsuccessful with others.

Nigra is a very upright bamboo. New canes start off green and then turn black with age and exposure to sun. Leaves can brown off at the tips due to under watering and too much hot sun, and hot winds. If this occurs then just give it plenty of water. In a few weeks, new foliage will appear. Black bamboo will look great in part sun and in spots protected from the sun. Keep moist and well fertilised.

As Nigra is a running bamboo it can be planted in big pots or long planter pots. Nigra can also be planted in high raised garden beds to create a beautiful grove. If you want to plant in a garden then it may be best to use a root barrier that is approximately knee high in the ground.

Black bamboo can be cut back to any height that you need. The more you cut this bamboo back, the thicker the leaves become. This bamboo has a small leaf.
